To develop good vocal sensitivity you need to keep a few things in mind...
To accompany this post, I have a clip of me singing where I explain the key concepts you need to keep in mind to create a soft sound through a theatrical technique.
Don't squeeze your throat and shut down the resonance for your space by modifying the vowel.
Restricting our voice and limiting our space for the sound to resonate freely can actually be a more common problem then you may think. Rather than doing this, try and aim for space and control the breath flow to manage your vocal dynamic level. Vocal exercises that focus on getting louder and softer is a great way to train your voice to gain control.
Keep the voice vibrant and engerised
Often I hear my students slow down the vibrato, let their voice get heavy, and allow the voice to become lifeless and dull when attempting soft dynamics. You need to work hard and smart to keep the voice lively.
Support your sound!
You may also feel the temptation to sing breathier to get the light, and more delicate sounds of soft singing. This can come at your detriment especially when singing theatrical. Keep the sound engaged and you will develop a more professional sound!
