My experience singing and performing to help students find their own path.

Singing and Performing

Often Vocal Coaches/Singing Teachers are hesitant to share their own stories, perhaps thinking, ‘Maybe the student might think of me less if I tell them how I began my journey,’ but the truth is, everyone did have a starting point at one time or another, and for the majority of us, they usually emerged from humble beginnings.

Let's start here. My Mum FORCED me to join a choir when I was young. I was told I was tone deaf by the Music Director. Now being a boy in love with football, I didn’t care for this criticism, but as I started doing more rehearsals and performances, I really started to build a passion for singing. So much so I started writing my own songs. I wrote a song almost every day and had in my first year as a young teenager around 200 pop songs I wrote. I also became obsessed with vocal exercises, and the constant practice of singing scales helped me really to find my voice and my intonation.

To this day, I think vocal exercises are extremely important in developing the voice.

When I turned 18, I went to Barcelona to play Football, but I soon came home to start my Bachelor of Music Degree. I began to perform regularly with concerts and competitions. I performed and regularly won talent quests trying to follow in the footsteps of my idol at the time, Anthony Warlow. I stepped outside of Pop Music and sang Musical Theatre, and eventually with the guidance of my Professors at the University of New South Wales and eventually the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, I was singing Classical Music and Arias.

When I was 22, I jumped in the deep end and fell into a prestigious Classical Competition where I was invited to study a Master Degree at the Sydney Conservatorium. I was already teaching full time and performing as often as I could at various events and productions. When I was 23 and 24 I went to Sicily in the European Summer to study Opera Voice with incredible Vocal Coaches, Conductors and Accompanists of Europe who worked at places like the Royal Opera House in London. It truly transformed my vision of Vocal Technique and profoundly not only inspired my own singing, but also my teaching methods.
