Unlocking your Vocal Potential: Releasing the Tone (Pure Vowel Vs NG)

Picture this: You are gloriously singing your favourite tune, pouring your heart and soul into every note, but something feels off. Sure, you're hitting the right pitches, but there's a certain richness and clarity missing from your sound.

Problem and Solution:

Say the word “Sing…” Notice how the “NG” is formed as you close the space in the soft palate by bringing your tongue up. Feel how the resonance travels into the mask, but also into the nasal passages.

Now, vocalise “NG” and slowly transition from that voiced consonant into an “A Vowel.”

Reflect on how, although the passage of sound becomes less blocked, the sound is still polluted with “NG.” This is often a root cause unintentionally when we fail to sing pure vowels. Practice transitioning from a spoken sound to a sung sound to further reflect on the different sensations.

NOW…

Yawn and bring the tongue forward, then speak “AH.” Try to feel a full release of a natural and bright sound from the soft palate. Feel your voice distancing itself from the voiced “NG” consonant. You should feel more openness behind the tongue. Now, hear the difference between the two "AH" vowels. Fine-tune your instrument. Practice and work hard!
